Gareth Steyn of Year 11 has been selected for the School Sport WA 18 & Under Golf Team. The team will be competing both in the National Championships and Interstate series on their home turf this year down in Mandurah during August. The National Championships will be held at Mandurah Country Club and the Interstate series will be held at the Cut Golf Course, which happens to be one of Australia's most well-known links courses.
Gareth is looking forward to the opportunity and is ready to compete against Australia's best junior golfers whilst not only representing his State of Western Australia but proudly representing the College in the process.
Gareth's past results point to what could be great success in August, with Gareth being the U16 Gross Champion the last two years in the Mandurah Junior Bowl with scores of 72 and 73. Gareth also has a fantastic ability to adapt and play links golf, which showed in his Top 10 finish in the Victorian Junior Boys' Championships last year, which was played at Moonah Links Golf Course in Melbourne, which is the hardest course in Australia. Gareth managed to shoot scores of 76,76,72,72. Gareth is one of the best junior match play golfers in the State and is an invaluable asset to his state team with a match play record of 14-2-1 just this year. Gareth was voted the most valuable player for both Joondalup's winning junior pennant team and Joondalup's Men’s team that sadly lost in the final.
After Gareth's exams are over, he will get started with preparation immediately, with his eyes already set on achieving a great result for his State in August.
