2018 Basketball News

November 26 saw 40 of our top junior basketballers travel to the Warwick Leisure Centre to compete in the annual Elite Sports Basketball Tournament, run by Mr. Michael Coleman.
Kingsway had a representative team competing in the Division 1 category of all age groups, including;
• 1 Junior Boys Team (7/8) – Coach (Mr Elliott)
• 1 Junior Girls Team (7/8) – Coach (Mr Gerbaz)
• 1 Senior Boys Team (9/10) – Coach (Mr Pike)
• 1 Senior Girls Team (9/10) – Coach (Mr Wager)
The teams performed exceptionally well throughout the day against opponents such as Specialist Basketball Schools Kennedy Baptist College and St. Norbets.

Our Junior Boys team went through the day undefeated and played Specialist team St Norbets in the semi-final and again in the Championship Game. They were able to win both games by impressive margins, Ethan Elliott and Jonah Muparutsa were both named in the Elite 8 All-stars Team. Well done to all of the Boys in the Junior Team.

Our Senior Boys team was met with a tough draw and only lost one game for the whole day. They missed out on a chance to play in the Championship Game but had some nail biting victories along the way including a 3-point buzzer beater by Sean Kiaye that bought the whole stadium to standstill.  Sean Kiaye was also named in the Elite 8 All-Stars Team for the day.

The Junior Girls team with more experience on the Netball court than the Basketball Court fought hard all day and had some real nail biters along the way. The girls missed out on a Championship game but were strongly led all day by WABL players Tayla Pike and Tayla Kedgley.

Our Senior Girls team also won more games than they lost but just missed out on a Championship game. The team again comprised of a few WABL players in Kiera van Sambeeck and Savannah Coleman whose experience shone through, Congratulations to Savannah Coleman who was also selected for the Elite 8 All-Stars Team.

Well done to all of our athletes who competed on the day. There are certainly exciting times ahead with the introduction of our own Specialist Basketball programme in 2019, run by current Perth Lynx Coach Andy Stewart and his team.  Secondary students can now choose Basketball as an elective and incorporate it into their weekly timetable for an annual fee of $440.
