In 2016 we started a new programme with “Peer Support Australia” which provides school communities with an evidence based, peer led approach to enhance the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of young people. The Peer Support Programme is integrated into curricula and sustained through all year groups. It supports positive cultural change within schools by incorporating a range of strategies developed through collaboration with members of the whole school community for the specific needs of the school. This year the Year 7 students are completing modules dealing with Resilience, which will assist them in the transition from Primary school into Secondary school.
The Year 10 Leadership Team completed a three day training programme at the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016, looking at various strategies and delivery methods to fully equip them in the delivery of the programme.
Two Year 10 students are partnered up and work with a group of approximately ten Year 7 students each week for the duration of the first term to complete the programme. It is overseen by the Head of Students team with Year 7 Christian Life Studies teachers keeping a close eye on the proceedings and mentoring the Year 7 students both before and after each session.
Other experiential learning modules that we will completing in the coming years at Kingsway will focus on orientation, relationships, optimism, anti-bullying and values.
